Welcome to the Montgomery County Council of the International Reading Association (MCCIRA). We are a literacy organization located in Montgomery County, Maryland and a local council of the State of Maryland International Reading Association (SoMIRAC) and affiliate of the International Reading Association (IRA).
We are over 200 members strong. We welcome everyone who loves literacy! This may include, but is not limited to: classroom teachers, reading specialists, special educators, administrators, supervisors, parents, college professors, education majors, instructional assistants, business professionals, reading initiative teachers, staff development teachers, ESOL teachers, speech pathologists, media specialists or public librarians.
Membership in the Montgomery County Council offers persons an opportunity to participate in a local organization dedicated to the promotion of the lifelong reading habit and effective reading instruction.
The mission of SoMIRAC is to improve the level of quality literacy in the State of Maryland. We promote quality literacy by:
- supporting the mission of the IRA
- disseminating best literacy practices to educators and parents
- advocating for literacy issues through legislation
- collaborating with educational institutions, professional organizations and businesses
